The AKC Canine Good Citizen test is the benchmark for a well-mannered dog in public. The ten-item test covers things like accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, walking on a loose leash through a crowd, and behaving calmly around other dogs.
Why CGC Matters
It's required for therapy dog work, stacks well with further training, and it's a concrete milestone that says your dog is truly ready for real-world situations. Many housing situations and insurance policies also look favorably on CGC-certified dogs.
THE 10-ITEM TEST
Accept a friendly stranger. Sit politely for petting. Pass the appearance and grooming check. Walk on a loose leash. Walk through a crowd. Sit, down, and stay on command. Come when called. Behave around another dog. React appropriately to distraction. Hold while the handler is briefly out of sight.
Pass all ten and your dog earns the AKC Canine Good Citizen title — and the kind of public manners you can rely on every day.
